PilotAware (PAW) Guide
PilotAware is a UK-developed electronic conspicuity (EC) system that enhances pilot situational awareness by receiving and displaying traffic from multiple sources.
Key Features
What is PilotAware?
PilotAware (PAW) is an electronic conspicuity system developed in the UK specifically for general aviation pilots. It's designed to be an affordable solution that helps pilots see and be seen by other aircraft.
Unlike some systems that only receive traffic, PilotAware can both receive traffic from multiple sources (ADS-B, FLARM, Mode-S, and other PilotAware units) and transmit your own position to the PilotAware network and OGN.
The system is particularly popular in the UK where it has become one of the leading electronic conspicuity solutions, with thousands of units in use.

Receive & Transmit
PilotAware is multi-frequency: it receives ADS-B on 1090 MHz and FLARM/P3I on 868 MHz, while transmitting P3I on 868 MHz.
How PilotAware Works
Receive (See Others)
- • ADS-B traffic on 1090 MHz
- • FLARM traffic on 868 MHz
- • Mode-S/Mode-C transponder bearings
- • Other PilotAware units via P3I protocol
- • OGN ground station data via internet
Transmit (Be Seen)
- • P3I protocol to other PilotAware users
- • Position data to OGN network
- • Visible on PilotAware ATOM grid
- • Compatible with CAA EC requirements
- • Low power, license-exempt operation
PilotAware and Stratux
Stratux and PilotAware serve similar purposes but have different approaches. Stratux is an open-source, receive-only solution that displays ADS-B and FLARM traffic. PilotAware adds transmission capability via its P3I protocol.
Both systems can display traffic on popular EFB apps like SkyDemon. Some pilots choose to run both systems for maximum coverage, while others prefer the simplicity of a single device.
Stratux with FLARM I/O capability can transmit to OGN, providing similar 'be seen' functionality to PilotAware for the gliding community.
