FANET (Flying Ad-hoc Network) Guide
Key Features
What is FANET?
FANET (Flying Ad-hoc Network) is an open communication protocol specifically developed for light aviation. It allows pilots of paragliders, hang gliders, and ultralight aircraft to share their position and exchange messages.
Unlike FLARM, which was primarily developed for gliders, FANET considers the special requirements of foot-launch aircraft: light weight, low power consumption, and extended messaging functions.
FANET devices can also share thermal and wind information, which is particularly valuable for paraglider pilots.
FANET Frequency
ISM Band (License-free)
Europe
FANET operates on the same 868 MHz band as FLARM and OGN, ensuring compatibility across the European light aviation community.
FANET Features
Tracking
- • Real-time position transmission
- • Compatible with OGN network
- • Visible on glidernet.org
- • Flight recording possible
Communication
- • Direct pilot-to-pilot messages
- • Group notifications
- • Share thermal markers
- • Wind speed and direction
FANET vs. FLARM
While FLARM is primarily an anti-collision system for gliders, FANET extends this functionality with additional features for paraglider and hang glider pilots.
FANET devices can receive and display FLARM signals, but are lighter and have lower power consumption – ideal for use on harnesses or helmets.
Many modern variometers and trackers support both protocols, ensuring maximum compatibility.
